Why do credit cards expire?

New replacement cards may come with a new technology that improves convenience or minimizes the risk of fraud such as contactless chip or 3D-Secure protocol respectively. In addition, plastic cards degrade with age after repetitive inserts and swipes. It can become worn and broken. Issuing new cards provides an opportunity to the bank to come up with new design or logo, or a new and improved terms and promotions.
